Q. What is Pin Code?
A. Pin in Pin code stands for Postal
Index Number. It is a six digit number allocated
by Indian department of Post. It helps identify the unique
geographic city/town/village/area to facilitate better delivery
of mail. It was first introduced on 15th August 1972.
Q. Why is there a need for Pin Code when
sending mail/postage?
A. It helps avoid confusion created
by incorrect address, similar sounding names, same name
towns/villages in different states etc.
Q. What is the difference between Pin
Code and Zip Code?
A. They both are the one and same
thing. Pin code is Indian equivalent of US ZIP code.
Q. How to identify an incorrect Pin
Code?
A. Pin codes are six digits in
length and start with a number between 1 and 9. If the pin code
contains more than six digits or less than six digits or starts
with a zero than the Pin code is wrong.
Q. Should I always include the Pin Code
when I send any mail/postage?
A. It is advisable to always include
Pin Code with the address as it helps ensure and aids in
delivery to the correct address.
Q. I do not have the Pin code of the
address, what do I do now?
A. In such cases it is advised to
use private courier companies and to make sure that you include
the contact number of the recipient along with the complete
address.
Q. Is it possible to identify a
location/town from just the Pin code?
A. Yes, it is possible to identify
any location uniquely from its Pin code. To identify and trace a

service on the site. Each Pin Code is unique to a post
office which is responsible for the delivery of all mail to the
area covered by it.
Q. I have noticed that some Pin Codes
start with 9, and the address does not contain identifiable
town/city name. Is the address and pin code correct?
A. Yes, the Pin code and address are
correct. Pin codes starting with 9 point to Army Post office (APO)
and Field Post office (FPO). These are post offices for delivery
to army bases and cants.
Q. I have an address I want my postage
to be delivered. I know the city/town name and area/locality of
the same. Is it possible to find the Pin code using this
information?
A. Yes, it might be possible but be
very careful and there is no guarantee that you would find the
right pin code. To find an area’s pin code from its name use the

Q. I have a Pin code that contains
alphabets and special symbols?
A. The information you have in the
form of Pin code is wrong, as Indian pin codes can contain only numbers
