All vehicles in India carry
unique registration numbers clearly visible via number
plates at the front and back of the vehicle. This Vehicle
registration number is alpha-numeric and in some rare cases
carries special characters also. Vehicle registration and
allotment of Registration number or vehicle number is compulsory
by law and all commercial and private vehicles are bound by it.
One can find a lot and trace a vehicle to the owner with the
help of vehicle number.
In most circumstances the first two digit of the vehicle
number represent the state or union territory in which the
vehicle is registered. For example – DL would denote Delhi and
BR would denote Bihar. Next after the first two alphabets are
two digits like 01 or 70. These two digits denote the local RTO
or Road transport office where the vehicle is registered in the
state. Most towns have one RTO office but bigger cities and
metropolitans can have more than one. For Eg. UP 16 – denotes
Noida town of Uttar Pradesh state and BR 01 denotes Patna town
of Bihar state. After these four digits there is a two
characters alpha numeric or all alphabets code followed by four
digit numeric code. So in all these ten characters combine to
form a unique vehicle registration number or vehicle number
which gives much information about it’s registration location by
just knowing it’s registration number.
Vehicles belonging to the armed forces carry an upward
pointing arrow instead of the two characters denoting the
state or union territory of registration. Similarly some very
important vehicles belonging to the state may have the national
emblem or three stars on their number plates.
This vehicle numbering system is same for two wheelers, three
wheelers, cars and trucks throughout India. One more thing to
note is that the background colour of the number plate is white
in case of private vehicles and yellow in case of taxis. Also
unlike some countries (like UK) the number plates in the front
and back of the vehicle are of the same colour.
This registration of vehicles at local RTO to get unique
registration number is only for fuel (petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG
etc.) powered vehicles and not for cycles or tricycles (commonly
called as Rickshaws) or solar powered vehicles used to ferry
people or goods.
To Track a vehicle location and know about its owner and address
the vehicle number mentioned on the number plate is enough. In
case of being a victim of any crime or accident the culprit can
be identified and put to trial with the help of his or her
vehicle number.
